ABOUT

Hi, I am Lucie Vágnerová, and I am a New York-based music scholar, education and arts consultant, and academic difficulty specialist. Born in the Czech Republic and educated across three countries, I bring over a decade of university teaching experience to my work with high school and college students around the world.

Academic Background

I hold a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from Columbia University, where my research focused on women in electronic music. I previously earned a B.A. in Music from the University of Nottingham, England, and an International Baccalaureate diploma from the International School of Prague. I have taught arts and humanities courses at Columbia University, New York University, and Montclair State University, receiving three university-wide awards in course design and pedagogy. my 10+ years teaching college courses give me a clear view of how universities, classrooms, and students work.

Education & Arts Consulting

In 2020, together with fellow ex-musicologist Jennifer Chu, I co-founded BKT Education, where we guide students through college and graduate school applications and teach communication skills to artists and musicians. We work with students one on one and develop group programming for schools, arts organizations, and community organizations. I have supported international and domestic students in building organizational and communications skills, advised them on school choice and applications, and coached them in best practices in writing and research. I also bring experience running public outreach education programs and volunteering as an Adult Literacy tutor at the Brooklyn Public Library.

Academic Difficulty Support

I also work with college students facing academic crises — misconduct charges, probation, suspensions, excessive absences, and a strained relationship with faculty and school admin. With each student, I develop a personalized strategy for addressing their academic difficulties, drawing on my belief that accountability is a learning opportunity not to be missed. I help students understand institutional policies, maintain academic integrity, and communicate effectively with professors and administration. My approach is grounded in my knowledge of how universities operate coupled with empathy for students whose difficulties are often compounded by an unequal playing field.
